Monitor Canopy

A removable fabric canopy that helps shield out light that makes it hard to see the computer monitor screen.

I'm posting this on a blog for those who may need an idea for "How to" make a computer canopy.
[Side note: If I'd planned on making this blog when building the canopy I would have taken pictures of the process and made notes. I'm doing this several months after.]

Using Microsoft Flight Simulator on my computer is what "helped" to create the "necessity" for this project.

It can be really frustrating, especially at night, while landing a Boeing 767 after perhaps "hours" of flying time to the destination airport,to suddenly be blinded by glare on the computer screen from someone turning on the ceiling light!
Or just trying to see the screen clearly while having bright sunlight coming through the curtains behind the computer!
This had gone on for several years....until a few months ago now.

Here's what I tried before finally making this canopy:

1. I thought the flat screen ViewSonic 19" CRT monitor would help. Not!

2. Then I purchased a computer monitor hood.$.. Not!

3. Then added a anti glare filter.$.. Not!

I removed the anti glare filter, but still have the hood attached, although this not needed for the canopy to work.

Here's how it looks when finished:

Might look ugly, but it does the job!

Note the bright light through the window behind the monitor!

Used one package of these. These have adhesive, but I had to use Super Glue Gel.

Slide rod through, then push down on tab to make the opening of the klip tight around the rod. To remove the rod, pull the tabs apart.

I bought a small roll of 3/4 inch velcro that has adhesive on the back. I put it on the top and both sides of the monitor and on the edge of the fabric.

BTW: The two cafe rods are extended to about 53 inches. This way the fabric behind my chair blocks light from that direction also. That part of the fabric is 30 inches in length from where it drops over the end of the rods. The fabric is about 48 inches wide and 73 inches long.

So much better now!

You can see the light contrast here:

This is how it looks when I store it these days. When I first built it, I was removing the fabric every evening when done for the day. This was hard on the bond between the fabric and the velcro. Now I just fold the fabric back onto the top of the monitor, and remove the rods and put them into the clothes closet.
